A Bleak World

Many games struggle to create a meaningful sense of atmosphere. While the action may be pulse-pounding, the story engrossing and the graphics beautiful, many titles struggle to tie it all together with a cohesive air that is palpable throughout the experience. Resolutiion is a game that puts the atmosphere first, giving you a dark and immersive experience that will leave you on the edge of your seat. The dark aesthetic, brutal and fast-paced combat along with the pixel art visuals gives this game a personality akin to a title such as Smash T.V. or Blackthorne which adds a dash of retro authenticity. It is a fantastic charm that never breaks amidst the exploration and combat mechanics.

A Living Weapon

You are a killer, led into this world the intentions of an inquisitive AI. There is little context to the journey as the intrigue unfolds around you. In both dialogue and visuals, you learn more about this ruined world as you swiftly move through the dangerous terrain. From deserts inhabited by giant, killer cats to ominous techno-caves, Resolutiion’s locales offer quirky and intriguing environments that never feel mundane. The action is fast and furious, with multiple tools of destruction available upon discovery. From guns to bombs to your own claws, the body you inhabit will always be able to utterly destroy any opposition you encounter. That does not mean it will be easy, however, as battles can often become unmanageable if you are not paying attention and using your tools to the most deadly effect. The encounters offered in this demo gave a fair challenge that taught me to never underestimate the enemies that inhabit these dungeons.

An Uncertain Road

Exploration is another cornerstone of Resolutiion’s design. The locales are wide open, offering a solid bounty of rooms and caves to enter. Each of these caves offers a feast for the eyes at the very minimum while some offer items or more when explored. Destructible environments also add to the exploration with some tools able to destroy obstacles that you can’t with normal attacks. Ones that can be destroyed normally usually contain health or other collectibles and offer some tensity to the combat as using them for cover is a viable option, as is tearing them down to get to your enemies. These elements force you to take your environment into account each time you enter a new one as you never know what your discoveries may lead to in the mysterious world of Resolutiion.

A Mystery Beckons…

Resolutiion’s dark mystery is compelling and engaging. From the beginning the aesthetic pulls you in as it beckons you to unravel it, offering its curious and brutal aesthetic from the top as the world opens up to you. The quirky charm, fast-paced combat and gorgeous pixel-art visuals create an undeniable retro inspiration that compliments the tone well and draws you into its world. I can’t wait to sink my teeth into the release of Resolutiion later this year.
