Divinity Original Sin 2 was surprised released in early September and the excitement over here at Duel Screens was palpable. Divinity Original Sin 2 is a favorite, and the transition to Nintendo Switch is seamless. Divinity Original Sin 2 on Switch maintains all the nuance and deep systems the game is known for and places it in the palm of your hands for the deepest PC quality RPG experience you will have on the go.
Control Points
The most important aspect of this port has to be the expertly crafted controls. It is hard to imagine a mouse and keyboard focused title like this working well with a controller, but this version hits the nail on the head. There are obviously some drawbacks here – menus take an extra few seconds to navigate, thus dragging out already methodically paced battles a bit longer. It definitely takes some getting used to, but quickly becomes second nature. This is important, because as you progress, the sheer amount of options to sift through are enormous.
While learning to navigate your menus will take a bit of time, moving around the map is intuitive and easy. The camera rarely gets in the way as you peer around corners to interact with boxes, chests, and corpses to grab some sweet loot. The sheer amount of object your can interact with, and the vast ways you can, is truly remarkable. Being able to do so with ease makes this a fun endeavor instead of a tedious one.
Same old (great) story.
Divinity is knows for its deep story and character choice. Creating a character is a daunting task, as the sheer number of options can be overwhelming. If you are a veteran of the series you can link up your account from Steam and transfer your save right over. Cross-save works perfectly, allowing you to continue your game on the go. For the sake of this review, a new game was started. When you do start a new game, you can choose pre-made characters with deep lore, or forge your own.
Rookies and Veterans
If you are new to the game, Divinity is an old school isometric RPG heavy on exploration and conversation. Choices not only matter, but are fun to make. Your party may differ from the next person’s, and battles are unpredictable and deep. There are endless combinations you can execute in a battle, and blending your party’s skills is part of the fun. There is endless replayability here and this package is even more jam packed.
If the massive adventure out of the box isn’t enough for you, some of the community made mods have made it into this version. While mods were not messed with for this review, a quick google search shows that these mods are some of the more beloved and incredible mods the community has made. This content will be added periodically in the form of a “gift bag” DLC drop, which gives hope that the game will be supported for a very long time post release.
Conclusion
Isometric RPGs hearken back to the glory days of PC gaming and Divinity Original Sin 2 brings that nostalgia to the forefront. Bringing it to console appears to be a flawless effort by the team at Larian Studios and is sure to be on your Switch’s homescreen for months. It will only take a few hours to get you hooked.
