CROW COUNTRY

It’s not often that a game leaves such an impact on me that it inspires a haiku, but Crow Country has that special touch. This captivating homage to old-school horror games, reminiscent of classics like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, carves its own spooky path in the genre.

From the moment I stepped into Crow Country, I was hooked. The game serves as a love letter to PS1 horror classics, infused with necessary upgrades and a compelling, albeit brief, story that guides you through a creepy amusement park filled with mysteries. Gameplay feels familiar, navigating similar mechanics to its forebears, fighting or evading monsters while solving clever puzzles to progress. The balance between challenge and accessibility is impressively achieved; it’s engaging without causing exhaustion, making for a refreshingly enjoyable experience in the horror genre.

Visually, Crow Country evokes nostalgic memories of mid-’90s games with its charming block graphics, offering a unique and expressive art style that adds a cartoonish quality to the atmosphere. While this aesthetic might reduce the inherent scare factor, each beautifully crafted landscape and grotesque creature tells a deeper story as the narrative unfolds. Rather than dread, I felt an overwhelming sense of determination to push forward and uncover the truths hidden within this horror-themed park.

HOLLOWBODY

If there’s one thing I love even more than horror, it’s retro horror, and while I have a soft spot for classic PSX-style games, it’s refreshing to see a developer embrace the PS2 aesthetics along with the distinctive controls that defined that era. Enter Hollowbody, a game that masterfully combines these elements to create a haunting experience that feels both nostalgically familiar and delightfully new.

Hollowbody embraces the nostalgia of classic PS2 horror games, reviving the fixed camera angles and deliberately clunky controls that defined the genre. This retro feel is not just a gimmick; it’s masterfully crafted to create suspense and tension that few modern titles can replicate. The polygonal character designs and the environments evoke a bittersweet longing for the past while maintaining a fresh appeal. Although some areas may lack visual variety, the grim, biomechanical decay that permeates the world effectively enhances the oppressive atmosphere of the game. Players will appreciate the clever environmental storytelling, which invites them to slow down and engage with their surroundings.

At its core, Hollowbody understands horror in a way that many modern games miss. The puzzles require players to think critically, with hints cleverly integrated into the environment, making for a satisfying challenge reminiscent of survival horror’s heyday. Combat may be intentionally stiff, but that adds to the feeling of vulnerability in this grim world. From swinging an electric guitar as a melee weapon to blasting through enemies with retro firearms, every encounter leaves an impact.

Hollowbody is a remarkable tribute to the survival horror genre, breathing new life into the form while delivering an unforgettable experience. Nathan Hamley has created something truly special, and any horror fan will want to add this gem to their must-play list!
