Recharging a classic.
Missile Command: Recharged is a brand new game from Nickervision, the creator of cult mobile game hit Ding Dong XL. Missile Command has a gameplay loop that is etched in our collective gaming minds of a certain age, but how do you take this classic arcade game and modernize it for a new era? Nickervision doesn’t just modernize it, it revitalizes it. With flashy neon graphics to a simple yet satisfying upgrade system, Nickervision has done it again, creating a modern classic for your mobile devices.
More than just a remake.
The concept from Missile Command: Recharged largely remains the same as its arcade older sibling: You have bases to protect from falling bombs, while shooting at them from one of three missile launchers. You lose when all your bases are destroyed. Sounds simple enough, right? What’s cool here is that the game is nearly endless. There are no levels to get through. This one is all about lasting as long as you can whole blasting wave after wave and shooting game changing power-ups to keep your momentum going. Some of the power-ups you’ll encounter are time freezing, mega blasts (that increase the size of your missile explosion), and rapid fire. When you finally do lose (and you will often) you take your points and upgrade one of four areas – Your shooting speed, your explosion radius, your reload speed, and your gun rebuilding speed. It sounds simple enough, but deciding which one of the four you want can make it much more cerebral, at least at first. Once you start getting deeper into the game because of your unlocks, you start to just spread the points evenly, which can be a little bit of a bummer.
Another cool feature is the AR mode that lets to place a retro Missile Command cabinet in your living room. Its a neat feature for a round or two, but it makes the screen so small its hard to have high scoring round. Still, though, it is a fun feature to show off to friends and family.
Conclusion.
Overall what you have here in Missile Command: Recharged is a bite sized and addictive score chasing classic arcade game oozing with neon explosions and a thumping sci-fi-techno inspired soundtrack. Nickervision takes these simple concepts and simply perfects the gameplay while adding just enough layers to make the score chasing worth it. The game is free to download, with unlimited lives able to be purchased. If you love arcade gaming, this is a must play.
