There is an old saying: heroes come in all different shapes and sizes. The developers over at Wildarts Games have taken this saying to heart and have cooked up Born of Bread – a whimsical turn-based RPG where you play as an adorable flour golem with a bunch of wacky abilities. Knead I say more?
The demo for Born of Bread begins where most amazing things start: in the kitchen. Deep in the heart of a castle, Papa Baker is preparing a meal for her royal majesty, The Queen. Papa toils away to please his Queen and follows the recipe to the letter. But in a moment of spontaneous mystical absurdity, Papa’s dish suddenly springs to life to create Loaf – a sentient gluten boy that is full of wonder and curiosity. Upon discovering Loaf’s existence, the Queens proceeds to completely flip out. It’s at this time as though by coincidence – and a little bit of plot convenience – that a monstrous collection of demons decide to infiltrate the castle. Naturally the Queen blames Papa and Loaf for this unexpected turn of events and expels them from the castle, setting the stage for an unpredictable adventure.
Born of Bread features an interactive turn-based combat system that will feel familiar to anyone who has played Paper Mario. Loaf carries a handy ladle that doubles as a bludgeon during combat and can be used to bash all manner of cute critters. All attacks require player input, meaning you’ll need to time your button presses and joystick movements to execute them successfully. Every attack, whether normal or special, requires your full attention. In some instances you’ll be flicking the thumbstick and in others you’ll be mashing on the A Button to unleash your moves. Every attack can also be charged for an extra bit of damage but be careful; you may end up missing entirely. This level of interactivity makes for an electrifying turn-based combat system that kept me fully engaged in every fight. . And what would an RPG be without a colorful cast of characters to bring along and help you bust some heads. Throughout your quest, you will meet a cast of party members which bring their flare and personalities into battle, making the turn-based action even more exciting.
From the brief demo, I could tell that Born of Bread has been baked with a lot of love. It’s bright and cartoony visuals and hilarious dialogue made for a wildly entertaining experience. It’s Paper Mario-inspired combat had me completely hooked and I cannot wait for the full release. Get ready for new hero will rise to the occasion Summer 2023. In the meantime, ‘dough‘ the right thing, and add this future genre hit to your Wishlist.
