A Different Kind Of Puzzler

Few games have as intriguing a hook as Superliminal. While simple in execution, the perspective-based mechanic draws you in and doesn’t let go. This brain-tickling mechanic is just the beginning of what the experience offers. Developer Pillow Castle’s puzzler is one that will entice new players with its simplicity and depth, offering a memorable experience. The translation to the Switch, however, is a bit of a rocky one.

Perception Is Power

Superliminal is a puzzle game based around perspective. Objects that you are able to pick up are varying in sizes, able to be manipulated by creating different perspectives. This allows you to change the size of the object based on how you see it in the environment and even create new objects based upon what you see. Using this unique mechanic you must navigate the strange dreamstate you are in, with each room offering a different puzzle and a unique take on this mechanic. The way perspective is used to interact with the world in Superliminal is astounding and will have you scratching your head thinking of possible solutions.

This dreamstate is one that is monitored by a mysterious corporation, interested in your unique prowess to subvert their unknown expectations. This creates an interesting sense of immersion and urgency in the game. The ominous feeling that you are always being watched is palpable at times, especially when you find the secret areas scattered throughout the game. It comes together to create a unique experience with fun puzzles which are always satisfying to solve.

Pick Up And Play

The simple controls of Superliminal make the game easy to understand. Jumping and picking up objects are the primary mechanics of the game, making gameplay straightforward with a focus on the perspective mechanic. The visual representation is minimalist but clean and evocative of the mysterious atmosphere of the game. The manufactured feel is satisfyingly plastic, making it all the more fun to find the secret areas that break the illusion of its creepy reality-show feel.

The simple gameplay works well with the handheld feature of the Switch. Unfortunately, the game runs into slowdown at an inconsistent rate. At times the frames will drop simply by moving the camera. While it does not detract from the core experience, it does break the pace of the game to have it suddenly slow down for no reason indentifiable on-screen.

A New Perspective

Superliminal is a great time. Despite suffering from frame drops, the port works well on the Switch and is definitely worth your time if you have never played it before. The puzzles are fun and the perspective-based size mechanic nails the dream-like feel the title is going for. The lonely atmosphere is driven home by the mysterious plot of the title, giving the game a unique personality. With an engaging gimmick and a fun setting, Superliminal is a fantastic experience for those looking for something new on the Switch.
