2019 was considered a “down year” by most, but that does not mean 2019 did not have its share of incredible games. But what is the game of the year? We here at Duel Screens will be making the case for various titles for your consideration.

For Your Consideration – Creature in the Well

What’s there to say about Creature in the Well that I haven’t already said in my review…plenty, actually!

It’s easy to mistake Creature in the Well for your average dungeon crawler – it very much presents like a stylized take on The Legend of Zelda – its got the isometric view going on, and stars a silent protagonist that must navigate this way through a series of dungeons in an effort to thwart the plans of an ominous beast that lurks in the shadows. Those similarities are only surface level however, as Creature in the Well goes out of its way to subvert the dungeon crawler genre and create an experience that is wholly original, highly experimental, and completely satisfying.

Ditching traditional dungeon crawler standards like enemies and the such, the game plays out like a weird game of pinball, where you are tasked with batting an electric ball of energy into generators to open doors and solve puzzles. Once you couple this unique and somewhat addictive gameplay loop with a breathtaking art-style, and cinematic camera work to convey the game’s mysterious plot, Creature in the Well is an experience that no gamer should pass on.

That is why Creature in the Well…is Game of the Year 2019.

What do you think? Is Creature in the Well your Game of the Year? Love it? Hate it? Drop a comment below!
