There is a moment at every PAX East that we cherish the most: when our schedule is packed with back-to-back appointments, and we weaving through countless booths and demo stations, and then suddenly, we stumble upon a game that is so intriguing, so utterly mesmerizing that it completely halts us in our tracks. This year, that captivating find was none other than Fera: The Sundered Tribes, the latest creation from Massive Damage, the minds behind Star Renegades.
Fera: The Sundered Tribes first captured our attention with its stunning visuals, and then with its fluid traversal system. The latest from Massive Damage plays like a monster-hunting action RPG intertwined with town-building elements. Players navigate through a breathtaking world, grappling and gliding in pursuit of colossal beasts to conquer and resources to fortify their home base. It’s evident that Fera isn’t merely emulating the Monster Hunter formula; its dynamic monster battles in fact redefine the genre. During our demo, we encountered a gargantuan, luminescent creature that hurled massive platforms into the air, altering the battlefield. This added an engaging layer of strategy, requiring us to swing and glide around while strategically timing our attacks. Fluid movement is key to success in combat, as these encounters resemble more of a bullet-hell scenario than a straightforward clash. Dodging their relentless onslaughts becomes imperative to landing precise strikes. Even at this early stage of development, the combat mechanics feel remarkably polished. If Massive Damage continues to refine these aspects, players are in for an exceptional experience.
Although our demo didn’t showcase the town/community building feature, Massive Damage informed us that players will be tasked with revitalizing their village by completing various objectives for the townsfolk. The depth of town development remains to be seen, but we’re hopeful for a dynamic experience beyond mere task completion and level advancement.
Fera: The Sundered Tribes stands tall as one of our most anticipated games, undoubtedly earning the title of the Game of PAX East 2024!
