2019 was considered a “down year” by most, but that does not mean 2019 did not have its share of incredible games. But what is the game of the year? We here at Duel Screens will be making the case for various titles for your consideration.

For your consideration – Sydney Hunter and the Curse of the Mayan

When I reviewed Sydney Hunter, I was not aware of how much impact it would have had on my year in gaming. Some say it was a weak year for gaming, but I couldn’t relate to that because I was so hyper focused on indie games all year. I have played so many I lost count (I counted…it is 41 indie games) and so many were of incredibly high quality. Sydney Hunter stands tall above them all.

Sydney Hunter is a tribute to Metroid and Megaman with its own delicious flavor. You explore ruins and collect items to unlock areas and defeat gods while surrounded by incredible chip tunes, witty dialog, and gorgeous sprite work. The game instantly transported me to a better time of PJs, cereal, and Saturday gaming sessions. The boss battles are unique and challenging and exploring is fast paced and rewarding. Sydney Hunter should be in your library if you love retro inspired games made for today’s standards.

That is why Sydney Hunter and the Curse of the Mayan…is Game of the Year 2019.
